A Big Favorite: The BMW 320

In 1975, BMW introduced a true classic: the BMW 320, one of the most popular models in the 3 Series. The 320 quickly became the company’s best-selling sedan. Just six years after its debut, the millionth vehicle of this series rolled off the production line. Its main competitors remained the VW Passat, the Audi A4, and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

The BMW 320 was one of the first models to offer different engine options from the start. In 1975, buyers could choose between a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 109 hp, a six-cylinder with 122 hp, and the 320i with electronic fuel injection and 125 hp. The early 320 models achieved impressive top speeds of up to 182 km/h.

Initially, the BMW 320 was only available as a two-door sedan. A key distinguishing feature was the round twin headlights, which would later become characteristic of the entire 3 Series. In 1982, the model range expanded to include a station wagon, a four-door sedan, a sporty coupe, a stylish convertible, and even a compact car. This variety allowed BMW to meet the needs of a wider customer base, offering a vehicle for every preference.

BMW didn't rest on its laurels and continued to develop the 3 Series. In the early 2000s, diesel models with direct injection were introduced, including the BMW 320d with 136 hp (100 kW). This version was available as both a sedan and a station wagon. After production of the first 320d ended, a more powerful diesel engine was introduced, available in coupe, sedan, convertible, compact, and touring body styles. On the gasoline side, the 320i shone with a six-cylinder engine producing 170 hp (125 kW) from 2.2 liters of displacement.

To meet environmental standards, BMW introduced start-stop technology and a six-speed gearbox in 2005. The BMW 320d received a particulate filter, while the gasoline-powered 320i underwent a facelift, gaining a new four-cylinder engine that also produced 170 hp (125 kW) but with lower CO2 emissions.

Today, in 2024, the BMW 320 offers a range of modern technologies and powertrain options. In addition to powerful gasoline and diesel engines, mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions are now available, offering both driving pleasure and eco-friendly mobility.
